This course will introduce children to the medium of clay by exploring both hand building and wheel throwing techniques. They will be guided through a range of hand building techniques including pinching, coiling and slab building to create a variety of objects e.g. plates, bowls, platters, figurines and small decorative ornaments.

Materials

BRING THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS TO CLASS WITH YOU
Please wear suitable clothing. All materials will be supplied

Note to parents/carers. Please accompany your child to the first class. You will then be required to nominate how your child will be leaving the WEA Illawarra premises at the end of each lesson ie being picked up or walking home

NOTE: We are running out of space….. Pottery items that have not been claimed 6 weeks after the end of your course will be thrown away. Please take them home – thank you 

WHERE YOUR CLASS IS HELD
50 - 56 Auburn Street, Wollongong

PARKING
There is plenty of parking onsite but please DO NOT TURN RIGHT into the carpark. You could endanger yourself, any passengers and any others on the road.

The centre should be approached from the South, either at the south end of Auburn Street, or by turning into Auburn Street from Swan or West Streets.

FOOD AND DRINK
There is a Zip Tap available for those who wish to BYO cup plus tea/coffee/milk supplies.

Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions there will be no supplies or utensils available at the WEA to make refreshments or to use for the consumption of food.

Please BYO refreshments for your use only.


CONFIRMATION OF COURSE and PURCHASE OF MATERIALS
At times WEA must cancel classes due to lack of enrolments. To avoid undue costs please do not purchase any materials until your course has been confirmed as going ahead.

Please call the WEA office on phone: 4226 1622 three days prior to the commencement of the class to confirm that it will be going ahead.

NO SMOKING AT WEA
Please note that WEA is a smoke-free business and smoking is not allowed in the building in the carparks or in any outside area on WEA property.

COVID SAFETY AT WEA

Prior to going to your classroom you MUST check in at the COVID station in the front foyer of the administration office to sanitise your hands and have your temperature checked.
We ask that you do this for EVERY week of your class – thank you.
On arrival at the front door it will be locked but please alert admin staff to open the door for you by pressing the buzzer on the wall.

Agenda

DURATION: 6 weeks
TIME: 4 pm – 5.30 pm
The course objectives are:
Week 1 - What is clay? Learn the fundamental hand building techniques of pinching and coiling to make vessel forms. Week 2 - Learn various slab building techniques to create forms in clay. Week 3 - Introduction to throwing on the pottery wheel. Learn how to prepare and centre clay and make a bowl form on the wheel. Week 4 - Learn how to turn/trim the bases of your wheel thrown pot. Week 5 - Learn how to decorate your pieces using underglaze colours. Week 6 - Learn how to apply glazes to your work for final decoration.
The classes will be conducted by Mary Monteleone.
Mary has a Bachelor of Creative Arts degree from Wollongong University and has been teaching ceramics at WEA Illawarra since 2001. In addition she is a Student Learning Support Officer in primary schools where she shares her passion of pottery with her students.
