The Language Literacy and Numeracy Program (LLNP)

This program is designed to assist participants to improve their English skills so they can either go on to further study or participate more fully in the workforce.
Am I eligible for this program?
You can participate, if you are: a migrant from a non English speaking background
- Participants who have either finished or nearly finished their AMEP hours
OR
- Permanent residents of Australia – do not have to be on Centrelink benefits
OR
- Some categories of temporary residents
- All participants must be under 65 years of age and working less than 15 hours a week.
Or you can participate, if you are: an English speaking resident or Australian citizen
- This program is for unemployed English speaking adults who may have had disrupted schooling or left school early and wish to improve their basic reading and writing skills.
- Participants must be under 65 years of age and working less than 15 hours a week.
How many hours can I attend?
The LLNP provides up to 800 hours of free English Language training
What will I learn?
LLNP courses are based on the nationally recognised Certificates I, II, III and IV in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) and the Certificates in General Education for Adults (CGEA).

Is free child care available?
No, but Centrelink may be able to provide a childcare subsidy. Talk to your local Centrelink office.
How many hours can I attend?
Participants attend between 10 and 20 hours a week.
Classes are 9.00 – 2.30 weekdays.

How soon can I start?
There is a new intake approximately every 4 weeks.

If I have to leave the course, can I come back in the future?
Once you start training you can have up to 4 weeks away (suspension time) in 160 hour block of training. It is important that you notify the WEA if you will be absent from training.
Education supplement
Participants attending this course may be eligible for the Education supplement of $20.80 per fortnight. Talk to your local Centrelink office about this.
Is a Transport Concession available?
This is available to full time students studying 20 hours or more (To apply for concession please attend the WEA Office and fill out an application).
Where are classes held?
Classes are held at either:
- WEA Wollongong, 50-52 Auburn Street (500 metres south of Wollongong railway station)
- WEA Shellharbour, in grounds of Balarang Primary school, Government Road, Oak Flats.
Who funds the program?
This program is funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
