The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)

AMEP FREE Course

Improve your English; improve your quality of life! The AMEP provides basic English training to help eligible adult migrants and refugees settle successfully in Australia. During the course you will also learn about Australian society, culture and customs.

How many hours of study can I do?

All AMEP participants will be offered at least 510 hours of free English tuition.

Am I eligible for this course?

Eligibility is determined by your visa and passport details. Call WEA and we can tell you if you are eligible.

What will I learn?

AMEP English courses are based on the nationally recognised Certificates I, II and III in Spoken and Written English (CSWE).

Is child care available?

Free child care may be available. (This is arranged through Lady Gowrie Child Centre, on behalf of AMEP Consortium, and the closest centre is on Crown St Wollongong. There is no childcare on WEA premises).

If you need child care, an application form for child care will be filled out at your pre training interview. The child care centre will notify you when a place is available.

How many hours can I attend each week?

Participants attend between 10 and 20 hours a week.
Classes are 9.00 – 2.30 weekdays.
No evening classes are currently available

How soon can I start?

There is a new intake approximately every 4 weeks.
You need to have a pre training interview before starting class. Click here for details on booking a pre-training assessment.

Can I work while studying?

Yes, although class times are set. This means you can work if work time is not at the same time as class times

If I have to leave the course, can I come back to it later?

Yes, you can stop attending class and then come back again. You need to notify the WEA of the reason why you are stopping so that you don’t lose your allocated hours.

What other services are also available to me?

  • Home tutoring
  • Educational counselling
  • Translation of documents – available at Wollongong TAFE

Is a Transport Concession available?

This is available to full time students studying 20 hours or more per week. To apply, students should attend the WEA Office and fill out an application form.
