About WEA Illawarra

As a registered training organisation, WEA Illawarra is proud to be able to offer the community quality adult education and lifestyle courses, business training, accredited training and Foundation skills services.

WEA Illawarra is part of the Community College network and operates as an independent community based not-for-profit Company dedicated to the principles of life-long learning. This means WEA can offer the courses you need and the courses you want at very reasonable prices.

WEA Illawarra recognises the value of a culturally diverse community and this is reflected in the courses we offer. We also value the importance of a tolerant society in which views are freely expressed and each person’s fullest development is encouraged. We always seek to provide a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for students and teachers alike.

WEA Illawarra is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 90297) accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) to provide nationally recognised training. This means that once you’ve successfully completed your training or qualification, the skills you are competent in will be recognised across Australia.

Operations

WEA Illawarra is a charitable organisation, registered as a Public Company Limited by Guarantee. Our company’s operations are regulated by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. We are also a Registered Training Organisation (RTO No: 90297), regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) . We are pleased to have been granted delegation of regulatory responsibility by ASQA. This means ASQA is happy with how we look after the quality of our information and training for students and have allowed us to manage our compliance to their requirements ourselves.

WEA Illawarra also operates an independent non-Government secondary school (Alesco, trading as ALESCO Illawarra) which is regulated by the Commonwealth and State Education Departments and the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards.

The WEA Illawarra Board of Directors is the governing body responsible for, and overseeing, our operations.

Our Venues

WEA Illawarra operates from several venues within the Illawarra. Our main venues are:

  • WEA Wollongong Centre, 50-56 Auburn Street, Wollongong.
  • WEA Shellharbour Centre, Balarang Public School, Oak Flats

Our Board

As a Company limited by guarantee the WEA is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of up to ten Directors with six elected and four appointed to the Board. Nomination as a Director is open to anyone from the community and all Directors serve two year terms.

WEA Illawarra is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission as a Public Benevolent Institution, has been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a Deductible Gift Recipient, and holds and authority to fundraise under section 13A of the Charitable Fundraising Act 1991 (CFN/24108).

History

WEA is the oldest non-government adult education organisation in Australia having been introduced into Australia in 1913. The WEA stands for Workers’ Educational Association and was formed in 1906, in England, as a way to provide workers with the opportunity for education. The first lecture was held in Wollongong in 1914, and up until 1993 services in the Illawarra were provided by the Regional Council of the Workers’ Educational Association of NSW. WEA Illawarra registered as a Company in December 1993 and in 2007 the WEA NSW was disbanded. There are three other WEA’s in Australia (WEA Hunter, WEA Sydney and WEA South Australia). These run independently of each other, however share a common ancestry.
